LiveJournal Major Notes: Spam counter-attack, RSS feeds again, CSI Deadly Intent contest [Nov. 5th, 2009|01:15 pm]

news

The empire strikes back

In recent weeks, we've taken huge steps towards blocking spam accounts on LiveJournal. In fact, we've suspended as many as 30,000 accounts in a single day! We've implemented several pre-emptive measures to prevent the creation of spam accounts, and we've honed our detection of suspicious content. Spam bots are a crafty lot, so we'll continue to refine our tactics and keep up the good fight to keep you safe from spam attacks on LiveJournal.

RSS feeds again

If you're addicted to [info]xkcd_rss, [info]icanhaschzbrgr, or other syndicated feeds, we're pleased to report that we've resolved the update error that was mucking up your RSS feeds. While content was being pulled correctly, it wasn't being posted to the feeds themselves. Late last week, we finally nailed down what we hope was the root problem, so content should post properly. We thank you for your patience.

[Current Music |Regina Spektor - Samson]

tonight i met up with a bunch of friends for a birthday, which consisted of a light dinner and a Regina Spektor concert. most of the people going didn't even really know who she was. we all had a lot of fun. i was the only guy in the group that went to the concert, though one other joined us for the dinner. afterwards we went for a drink over at Von's and had many a good laugh. one was disappointed that i forgot to bring her my copy of Return to Oz.

the concert was good. it felt largely like her album work for the most part, but she was pretty funny. the only thing i didn't like is that they constantly had those incredibly bright lights spinning out into the audience and they were blinding. really. we don't need to be lit up. plus it's insanely distracting.

and the bible didn't mention us )

40 weeks later... [Nov. 3rd, 2009|08:52 pm]

So, I have a very major confession to make. I... love... Glee. Sitting here, listening to the tracklisting from the first season. I find it slightly weird, very ironic, and highly different from what I normally listen to. Back story: I read daily on a forum for a game that I play. On said forum, there's a section for tv shows, movies, music, etc. I don't watch tv. Don't really have the time to do it, I'm either gaming, or out. So I'm reading the forum, and they're talking about the show Glee. I like musicals, I like the opera, I enjoy the arts. The people who sing on the show are like, top quality Broadway alums. They even had Kristin Chenowith on one episode. This doesn't sound like something that I'd normally be into right? Just check it out, you might even like it. http://www.youtube.com/user/LeelooDoyle

i've preordered a Moto Droid. i've not been this excited for a device since the 360 launched. the keyboard disappoints me, but i'll probably use the on-screen one anyway. i'm not excited about switching to verizon.

it seems they've had quite a few people already pre-order the phone and the verizon stores are opening early for it. my pre-order is at best buy, but i can switch that up. the 2 year contract isn't worth it, and i don't wanna deal with it. 1 year i can deal with but not the 2.

if i was more into social networking, i'd be even more into this phone.

Why I'm not switching from Linux to Windows 7 [Oct. 31st, 2009|09:07 pm]

madewokherd
So I've been using Windows 7 for part of a day. I've set up the software I'd normally be running (so far all communication software of some sort, really). I have no major complaints about the desktop.

I really like the new taskbar. I found it immediately intuitive and much better than the standard "one wide button for each window" deal. (In case any OSX fans want to point at the dock, I'll say that I find the OSX dock completely unintuitive and much worse than the standard "one wide button for each window" deal.)

I no longer want any programs I use to minimize icons to the tray. I have as much space as I need in the normal taskbar. I can easily find the applications I want there, by the large icons, as well as their individual windows, by the previews. I'd even consider turning off tabs in my programs.

So really the desktop has one major advantage and a lot of minor pros and cons. If it were only about the desktop for me, I'd seriously consider switching.

There is one major problem with Windows that stops me from doing this. It is hard to develop cross-platform software on Windows, and it is very easy to develop cross-platform software on Linux.

Just about everything I write runs on multiple platforms. This is actually very easy to do on Linux. Just create as few hard dependencies as you can, and make sure the things you depend on are cross-platform. For me, that often means pure standard C or pure standard Python. If I need a gui, I bring in GTK. Rarely do I add any other hard dependencies.

I know that it's possible to do all of those things on Windows. I can install mingw, Python, a development version of GTK, Git (gotta have source management), SCons (gotta have a build system), pkg-config (else how would SCons know how to link to GTK?), and PyGTK (with its many dependencies). The problem is that getting those things installed and working together, then keeping them updated and working together, is difficult. On Linux, I tell my package manager to grab those things once, and they are working, integrated, and updated forever.

Of course, there are various Linux apps, features, and quirks I'd miss, but I could easily deal with all of them except this. Right now I have a development platform that Just Works, and I don't want to give it up.

The Windows 7 EULA has a Wine clause? [Oct. 31st, 2009|05:45 pm]

madewokherd
I installed Windows 7 today. Naturally, I read the EULA. It was long and included many things I thought weren't very relevant, almost as if they don't really want me to read it at all.

Among many other things, it said this:

"You may not [...] use components of the software to run applications not running on the software;"

I may not use what for the what what?

At first I took it to mean this:

"You may not run emulators in Windows 7."

An emulator running in Windows 7 would use components of Windows 7 (as all applications running in Windows 7 do) to run applications on some other OS.

But they can't possibly mean this.

My next thought was that maybe they mean this:

"You may not use .dll files from Windows 7 (or other components we haven't thought of) to run applications in Wine (or other similar things we haven't thought of)."

Of course, very few people do this anymore. Most of the components you would want to use are actually redistributable libraries (not really part of the OS at all, I'd argue), ideally shipped with the applications. When they're not, they have installers you could run.

Still, it's interesting that they're putting restrictions in their EULA specifically for Wine.

(Or is this really about something else that I've missed?)

LiveJournal Major Notes: Search super-tweak, postcards, and amazing user content! [Oct. 29th, 2009|10:53 am]

news

[theljstaff]
[Tags|, , , , , , ]

In response to user comments from last week, we want to let you know that we'll remain LJ cut-free for the next month in order to get more eyeballs on our evolving newsletter. As for product coverage, that continues to be our top priority. For more granular detail, however, we recommend you join [info]lj_releases.

Super-tweak for Yandex search

Some of our beta testers expressed privacy concerns using the Yandex search engine. Here's why: Last week, when you ran a search, you could see the usernames (and only the usernames) of everyone who commented on an entry, even if that entry was switched to Private or Friends Only after it was originally indexed. You could NOT see the actual comments from Friends Only or Private posts. In response to your input, we've implemented a fix to keep all user activity currently marked Friends Only or Private completely hidden. If you'd prefer your public content not to be indexed by Yandex, click here and use the settings labeled Search Inclusion (this covers your entire journal) and/or Comment Search Inclusion (which covers comments only). To test drive Yandex search now, click here.

Postcards from the edge

Several years ago, we asked LiveJournal users to send postcards to help us decorate our dull, white-washed offices. Since a good idea warrants repetition, we're at it again (same issue, new address). We hope you'll surround us with LiveJournal love by sending your postcards to Frank the Goat, Esq., c/o LiveJournal, Inc., 539 Bryant Street, Suite 210, San Francisco, CA 94107. We'll post snapshots right here. Be sure to include your username, since we'll randomly pick 10 lucky recipients to win free paid account time.

Conquer Writer's Block

Here are some excerpts from this week's most popular question of the day:

If a friend or relative makes a racist or homophobic remark, do you tend to confront them or let it slide? Are you more likely to confront them if it offends you directly or someone else who seems reluctant to speak up?
  1. I find it easier to stand up for other people, and i wouldn't let it slide if they made a rude or hurtful comment.
  2. Usually if a friend makes a racist or homophobic remark, I tend to let it slide. I think that while i would not say such things myself, I have no right to censor those around me.
  3. This happens all of the time. I confront some relatives, but I refuse to if they are drunk or watch Fox News.
  4. I'd let it slide if it was just a private remark... As much as I despise bigotry and intolerance, I know that you can't change people-they have to change themselves ...
  5. Confront! confront! confront! Politely, but without equivocation.
  6. SPEAK UP. Always, always, always speak up. Letting something slide lets ignorance win. No matter if it offends me directly, or someone else, I will confront the speaker and let them know that's not ok.
  7. I don't get offended personally. As an immigrant, woman, gay and person of color if I took every single potentially offensive remark seriously I wouldn't get anything done.
  8. I punch them in the balls. With my mind.
  9. I do speak up, but often very timidly because I feel that I'm white and therefore I don't really have any authority to lecture someone on what's racist and what isn't...
  10. Generally speaking, I do not let this shit fly, because it reduces me as a person, to this non-person and it replicates the destructive discourse that makes sure that sexual minorities, racial minorities, women, people with disabilities, trans people and every intersection thereof into something other than human... And sometimes... I'm just too tired to deal with it, so I roll my eyes, make a sarcastic remark and hope the conversation moves on quickly.
For more daily questions and user comments, join [info]writersblock. FYI, we don't want to invade your privacy, so we haven't credited individual users for their responses. We'd appreciate your feedback on this!

went looking for a costume today. still don't have some awesome idea that i really want to do, and there wasn't much of inspiration at Value Village. Emily had all sorts of ideas, but i wanted it to be kinda cool. usually i want to do it right, or not at all. Doug came along and hung out with us, and then we went for burritos at Bimbos which was yummy as usual. tomorrow i'm having dinner with another friend at a place i've been curious about for a while, and i guess we might go out looking for more costume stuff then.

i guess friday i'm going to one of the haunted fields / cornfield mazes, and saturday i've got a few parties i can go to, and some friends going out that i can catch up with. my roomie is having a little party here, which i'll probably show up for. Doug will be hanging out with us then as well, and maybe we'll meet up with some of my other friends. i'm kinda just up for whatever. there's that zombie film at midnight, at the egyptian, too, but i'm not sure if i really wanna do that then.

i think i found my new phone. at the moment it looks like i'll switch to verizon to get a droid in about 2 weeks. i've been wanting an android phone for quite some time, but there hadn't been any that i wanted until now. this one seems decent enough, and i really need one badly as my current phone has started resetting often.

i've been crazy busy at work this week, which is a good thing. i'm always the first to jump at things that are interesting and a bit of a challenge as it's the only thing that appeals to me. so i'm always making up my own work to do and this is a good case of that. i took something that could've been just a simple thing, and i made it far more complex and grand than it needed to be, but i'm pretty sure they'll all like it. Steve was already going around telling people about it after i showed him.
